So you want to be more technical, eh? Let's start to understand the business of technology, because when you understand what it takes to run a Tech Department, you start to peel back the layers of people, processes and technology that make up the Business. Take the top-down approach.
My recommendation? Start with IT Service Management (ITSM) and ITIL.
ITSM is a set of practices, policies and procedures that help manage services delivered to end users. ITIL is a framework that teaches the best practices to implement ITSM in an organization.
And now...Free Resources!!!
I'm personally certified in ITIL v3 Foundation and Continual Service Improvement. It might be a good idea to look into ITIL certification to add that to your resume!
Isn't ITIL Old School?
A lot of people say "ITIL is out, Agile Framework is in." We'll get into Agile in future posts, but ITIL is just another set of tools for your toolbox in understanding how the business of IT Works.
The older the organization, the more likely they have roles that can be mapped to the ITSM framework. The newer the organization, the more likely most of the ITSM processes are automated and there are smaller, more efficient teams of people who were multiple hats.
